When would I need a DI or preamp with Submarine pickups?

Most players don’t need one, but a DI or preamp can be useful in certain cases:

Running very long cables, where extra signal strength helps preserve tone

Using mixers or interfaces without, or without enough, Hi-Z inputs

Adding gain to drive a pedal, amp, or other device harder
