What sub-octave pedals would you recommend?
It depends on your playing style:- Strummers – start with a polyphonic octave pedal such as the EHX Pitchfork or TC Electronic Sub’n’Up. These track chords more reliably.- Fingerpickers – the analogue EBS Octabass is highly recommended. It’s monophonic, so it only tracks one note at a time, but with good muting technique it produces a warm, natural sound.A few extra tips:- Monophonic pedals can sound glitchy if they receive more than one string at once. Fingerstyle players can adapt with muting techniques (thumb or palm muting).- A compressor before the octave pedal isn’t essential but can add sustain and improve tracking.- Bass-focused pedals (like the MXR Bass Octave Deluxe) are designed for higher-output pickups. If you use these with a Submarine Pickup, we recommend adding a clean boost or compressor before the octave effect.
