Toast is a musician and producer based in Nashville, TN specialising in v-guitar and midi guitar processors trying to find different ways to reinvent the standard in guitar sounds...
What has previously been your approach to guitar?
My approach to guitar was always to find ways to break the norm and standard approach we are all so accustomed to. That would always look like putting my guitar through synths, vocalizers, passive turntable speakers, etc. whatever I can find to make it as unconventional as possible.
How do you use the SubSix?
I currently use the SubSix with a ready-to-go cheap 6 channel mixer into my interface. Allowing me to gain control, put pedals on, and manipulate each strings I wanted to before I record or play.
What influence has the SubSix had on your creative process or workflow?
It's influenced me to play precisely what I need to play with sometimes the minimum I have. I love to run either the top or bottom two strings for bass/synth but that also limits how I can use the remaining of the guitar. I've had to find ways to make less strings now sing more and find voicings with what I have left, almost like learning to play a lot with a little.
What have been the surprising discoveries in the time that you've been using it?
Some surprising discoveries have been realizing what I can actually turn my guitar into. I have been into midi guitar for just a short time now running through different vst's but now I'm truly seeing the capabilities with actually being able to run different amp patches, instruments, and even having a string control Ableton controls with turning it into midi.
Do you plan on using it in any other projects and if so what ideas to you have for its future use?
I'm a huge fan of classic band jams with my mates at my home studio so lately using it for live jam instrumental recordings really paint a bigger picture of its future capabilities. Running it with my mixer as I jam I am able to swap pedals, make new chains all within just one single string and change the room and mood in an instant.
How would you use it in a live setting?
I drew out a crazy dream for a stage setup (either as a solo act or with a band for my own music) to have 6 different speakers/amps all set in different places on the stage both as visually pleasing but also as the most super powered panned wide guitar sound ever with each string running into each different speaker. It might be a disaster but could be a cool solo moment for a second. Either way I must try it.
What is your favourite guitar gear? Hardware, software, pedals, anything...
Honestly it's hard to beat tape machines. I have an old Akai in the studio and running even just guitar through it, messing with the tape to get that wobble or even slapback sounds really put a smile on my face. That is probably tied with some sort of sampler/instrument I can spend hours messing with by itself like the K.O or OP1 from Teenage Engineering.
What in your current arsenal has been the most inspiring/interesting to use with the SubSix?
It's been super interesting to use the SubSix with synth styled sounds and a fast auto tune or even Hummanoid patches from Baby Audio and running that parallel with something like the VG-8 or a classic DI dry sound.
How has having multiple channel outputs changed how you use these?
For the most part, things like the Humanoid and auto tune are primarily used on vocals so it has allowed me to explore weird vocal styled guitar sounds so rather than tune and harmonizers being used subtlety but as actual instruments and lead sounds. Each string could have a different harmony engine attached to it or auto tune patch installed.
What equipment would you most like to see developed as a companion to SubSix?
I'm not sure if it would be equipment but I'd love to somehow figure out a way to do a dice roll styled patch where each string gets randomized different sounds whenever you choose in just a second. Sometimes I have a cool idea for two or three strings and the rest are just normal DI or random slots to throw different things on but, if there was something to relief that questionable curiosity for just a second and randomize 6 different sounds for you that could be silly, fun, and time saving. Could honestly bring even more possibilities.
Have you got any tips for other SubSix users?
There are no rules, go absolutely nuts and explore, explore, explore.
What are you listening to at the moment?
Daryl Johns by Daryl Johns.
What are you currently working on?
I am currently finishing an original full length album planned for early 2026.
