Peter Holmström is a Portland-based guitarist best known for his work with The Dandy Warhols, a band he co-founded in 1994. His signature guitar sound - rich in effects, textures, and atmosphere - has been key to the band’s acclaimed albums likeThirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia and Welcome to the Monkey House. Beyond the Dandy's, Holmström leads the experimental project Pete International Airport, and plays in other collaborations including Sun Atoms, and Walls Of Dada.

The third album from Pete International Airport 'It Felt Like The End of the World' was released last year via Little Cloud Records. Rachel Goswell from Slowdive, Alexander Hackett from Pang Attack, Dion Lunadon from A Place To Bury Strangers and the D4, and, none-other-than Tom Petersson from Cheap Trick (on 12 string bass), tangle with Peter’s usual coterie of musical foils. The results are folded into Holmström’s hyper-stylized world of symbols, themes, and archetypes. The LP's core roster boasts the cream of the neo-psychedelic crop, of which The Dandy Warhols, and their shadow, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, are the reigning kings.

The Dandy Warhols' 12th studio album Rockmaker was released in March 2024 which celebrated their 30th year together with a sprinkle of glitter on their grime accompanied by guests Debbie Harry, Slash, and Pixies' Frank Black. The band are embarking on a series of dates throughout Europe in July and the US in September.

Peter also composes music for computer games including Forza with more video game soundtracks on the horizon...

What made you want to add the SubSix to your current setup?

In the past I would frequently record each string individually so I could effect them separately. Different reverbs, delay times, etc. so it seemed like the SubSix would be perfect for me.

How do you currently use it?

I am still figuring it all out, but at the moment I am running the SubSix into two Universal Audio Ruby pedals and one Dream. Those go straight into my DAW and I effect everything with plugins. Someday soon I’m going to get some ridiculous pedal chains going and have a lot of fun!

Has it changed your creative process and if so how?

In a few ways it has sped things up. Before I would have to do six separate takes before I discovered if my ideas were worthwhile.

Have there been any surprising discoveries in the time that you've been using it?

I can’t say I’ve had any surprising discoveries…just endless new possibilities

Have you used it as part of a group/larger ensemble rather than just solo?

So far it’s only been a recording tool. I do plan on using it for one project in the future.

Do you have any plans to use it live?

I would like to, it would definitely help realize some of my studio tricks in a live situation.

What is your favourite guitar gear? Software? Hardware?

I recently got an Eventide H90 and I’m blown away by how good it sounds and how much it can do.

How has having multiple channel outputs changed how you use these?

Might have get more…or jut choose which string gets the Eventide magic.

Have you got any tips for other SubSix users?

Have fun! There seems to be an endless amount of new ways to use it. And definitely follow Submarine on instagram to see what other people are trying to. The different Chase Bliss pedal per string and the B bender trick are amazing!

What are you currently working on?

Currently working on the next Dandy Warhols record as well as the next Pete International Airport record. Sun Atoms is in the writing stage and Walls Of Dada will have a record out soon. There is also some more video game soundtrack work that might happen towards the end of the year...
